Coral reefs need our help

A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration report on the world's coral reefs - including Hawaii's - is the first detailed study to go beyond anecdotal evidence and patchy science to provide conclusive data. The conclusion is alarming. The reefs are dying.

Dave Allison of the advocacy group Oceanana said the entire world's coral reefs "border on disaster" due to short-term and long-term human impacts - overfishing, shoreline development, beach erosion, runoff and rising amounts of CO2 being absorbed.
